When I was in elementary school, you could find me with a book in hand at any given moment. From Ella Enchanted to The Magic Tree House series, my summer reading list was always filled with beautiful and exciting stories. I must have been in 2nd or 3rd grade when my mom surprised me with a collection of Magic Tree House books (my favorite series). I still remember how excited I was to get lost in those pages.
As I grew older, I found myself reading less without even really realizing it. I have such fond memories of falling in love with countless stories. So, I’ve made it a point to rediscover the joy that reading has brought me. I put together a summer reading list of whimsical stories (including some books I’ve previously read and some I’ve always wanted to read) and can’t wait to experience each one!
A Whimsical Summer Reading List
- Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. I don’t recall a time when I didn’t know who Anne of Green Gables was. My mother introduced me to Anne was a little a girl. Not only is Anne’s story beautiful, but it’s a nostalgic one for me!
- The Fairy Tale Girl by Susan Branch. I read this book in one sitting when it was released a few years ago. It’s a first-person/diary-style book in which artist, Susan Branch, shares her adventures (and misadventures!) One of the best parts is that it’s written entirely in her handwriting.
- Emma by Jane Austen. This one has been on my reading list for as long as I can remember (amongst many other Jane Austen novels). I’m looking forward to finally diving into it this summer!
- Boys in the Trees by Carly Simon. I read Carly Simon’s memoir a couple years ago and was so moved by all of her incredible experiences and poignant way of portraying them. I especially loved reading about her childhood memories on Martha’s Vineyard.
- The Vintage Teacup Club by Vanessa Greene. I know they say to never judge a book by its cover, but this one is absolutely adorable! The Vintage Teacup Club is about three women who fall in love with the same vintage tea set at an outdoor market in the English Countryside. They decide to share the tea set which sparks a special friendship amongst them.
- Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert. This self-improvement book overflows with wisdom and inspiration. I came upon it at a time in my life when I truly needed to hear Elizabeth Gilbert’s perspective. If you are a creative or have dreams of pursuing creative endeavors, this is a must-read!
- The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. This is another nostalgic tale for me. I remember absolutely loving it as a little girl and can’t wait to revisit it after all these years.
What books are on your summer reading list? I would love to hear your recommendations!
