The other afternoon, I was browsing through my mother’s curio cabinet. It’s filled with knick-knacks and family heirlooms that once belonged to my great grandparents. From my great-grandma’s tiny ceramic kitten collection to wooden figurines hand carved by my great-grandpa, there are countless treasures to be found on those cabinet shelves. While browsing, I started thinking about the stories behind these little treasures and if my great grandparents knew that they would one day be proudly displayed by my mother.
This got me thinking about my own treasures and the stories they hold. I thought about my most prized possessions and how they might have special meaning to souls that I haven’t met yet. Maybe the pair of earrings I wear for special occasions will belong to my great-granddaughter and maybe she will make beautiful memories while wearing them. Maybe my diary collections will be uncovered by my niece and she’ll find valuable lessons in them (or just think I’m a little too romantic!)
I also wondered who my tea cup collection may end up belonging to and hoped that it would bring as much joy to them as it has to me. All these thoughts about the unwritten chapters of my belongings made me realize the true beauty of collecting. Most of us have probably heard the quote, “Collect moments, not things.” But what if those moments became treasured memories…and what if those memories were kept alive by things?
I believe the china reserved for Thanksgiving dinners will always be a reminder of the laughs shared amongst loved ones during the holidays. The dress you wore on your first date will always be a reminder of innocence and magic. The book you read over and over again in high school will always be a reminder that solace can be found in chaos.

Most of us have probably heard the quote, “Collect moments, not things.” But what if those moments became treasured memories…and what if those memories were kept alive by things?
Look around your home and take a moment to recall the memories attached to your special treasures. Imagine their potential to bring joy and even more cherished memories for generations to come.
This thought may spark your desire to start collecting something. Try taking a trip to your local thrift store and search for an item that speaks to your heart. Start filling photo albums with pictures you’ve taken. Fill a binder with your drawings and the calligraphy you’ve been practicing.
The treasures of your heart are sure to become treasures of another’s heart one day ❤️
