There is a beautiful and thought-provoking quote by Nikita Gill that says, “Some people survive and talk about it. Some people survive and go silent. Some people survive and create…The next time you look at someone’s life covetously, remember that you may not want to endure what they are enduring right now, at this moment, whilst they sit so quietly before you, looking like a calm ocean on a sunny day.”
When I first read these words, I immediately started thinking of all the outgoing, upbeat people I’ve met. My wallflower heart has always carried a bit of envy for lives of the party. But this quote got me thinking about how bubbly doesn’t always mean happy — how each of us deals with the not-so-joyous parts of life in our own unique ways. For me, it has always been writing. Remnants of my (at times) broken heart reside in countless notebooks stacked beneath my bed. They reside in so many of the words in my songs. And naturally, they reside in lengthy text messages to dear friends.
I think it’s important to understand that we each have our own special way of facing challenges. Most of the time, it’s nearly impossible to know if a passerby on the crosswalk is having the hardest day of his life. Whether we’re on cloud nine or we’re caught in the middle of a storm, we can all use a little sunshine, don’t you think? We may never know how much a small act of kindness can make a difference in someone’s life. Below are 12 ideas you can use to easily brighten someone’s day:
12 Simple Ways to Brighten Someone’s Day
1. Leave a Note
Leave a thoughtful note for a loved one somewhere you know they’ll find it or write a kind message on your receipt at a restaurant.
2. Send a Surprise
Receiving an unexpected pleasant surprise is always uplifting. Some stores (Anthropologie & Target!) offer gift cards that can be sent via email or text message. This is an easy and thoughtful way to surprise a friend.
3. Make Something
Whether it’s a card, a batch of cookies, or mix CD, give a gift made with your own personal touch.
4. Do Someone’s Chore For Them
Do the dishes, get the car washed, vacuum, or take out the trash for your roommate(s) or family. If you live on your own, visit a loved one and help them with their housework.
5. Mail a Letter
There’s nothing quite like sending and receiving handwritten notes. It’s a thoughtful gesture that continues to stand the test of time. Mail a letter to a friend just because 💌
6. Tip/Donate
Give your change or extra dollar to a special cause at the cash register. Donate items in need of a new home such as unused eye glasses (this charity distributes eye glasses to adults and children who can’t afford them) and clothes that no longer fit.
7. Say Something Kind
While scrolling through Instagram, we often (and sometimes mindlessly!) double-tap photos. In addition to “liking” a photo, take an extra moment to leave a kind comment or compliment for the person who posted it.
8. Include & Invite
If you attend school, invite someone who may be sitting alone at lunch to eat with you.
9. “I Was Thinking of You”
Send someone a sweet song that reminds you of them 🙂
10. Congratulate
Practice being intentional about congratulating a loved one or acquaintance on their accomplishments.
11. Sweets Are Sweet
Bake a batch of cookies and bring them to school or work for everyone to share.
12. Check-in
Simply ask friend how they’re doing today. A little can often go a long way ❤️
I hope these ideas find their way to bring a little bit of sunshine into your life – have a beautiful day, friend!
