As you may know, this year I’ve made some very exciting changes to The Enchanted Book Club! One of which has been incorporating live discussions with celebrated literary figures. This has been such a wonderful experience so far. Our community has had the opportunity to chat with inspiring storytellers like Caroline Jane Knight (Jane Austen’s niece), Annie Barrows (author of The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society), and so many more! This past Friday, we hosted a conversation with Julie Andrews’ daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton. Emma has written over 30 children’s books with her mother, co-authored her mother’s memoirs, co-hosts her podcast, Julie’s Library, and has made incredible contributions to the literary community in her own right as a children’s literature professor and writing coach.
Sitting down to chat with Emma was one of the most inspiring ways to spend an afternoon. She generously shared insightful details on the storytelling process, little-known publishing specifics, and beloved memories with her mother. The event attendees and I learned so much from Emma. For example, did you know that when publishing children’s books, the author and the illustrator almost never communicate?
Throughout our eye-opening discussion, I couldn’t help but think of the kindred spirits in our community who would have loved to hear Emma’s wisdom. Typically the recordings of these conversations are exclusively available to Enchanted Book Club Deluxe members. However, as a special gift, I wanted you to share the full interview with you. If you are a fan of any of Julie Andrews’ films, are interested in becoming a published author, and/or enjoy children’s literature, I think you will LOVE watching it:
